SUMMARY:RICK WAKEMAN - FINAL SOLO TOUR - AN EVENING OF YES MUSIC AND OTHER FAVORITES
DESCRIPTION:Rick Wakeman – Final Solo Tour\nAn Evening of YES Music and Other Favorites\nSaturday\, October 5\n8 PM\nThe ultimate keyboard wizard\, Rick Wakeman CBE\, will be embarking on a tour of the US with a series of solo piano concerts for the last time in 2024. Rick\, who has become almost as well-known for his intimate piano shows as his prog rock extravaganzas\, has decided that after a career spanning over 50 years\, he is calling a halt to lengthy American one-man show tours\, in order to concentrate on composing\, recording and collaborating with other musicians. As an exclusive gift for fans\, on these shows Rick will be premiering a brand new piece of music: Yessonata\, a 30-minute instrumental work featuring YES themes and melodies\, woven into sonata form. \n \nAbout Rick Wakeman CBE\, FRCM\nAfter studying piano privately for 12 years\, Rick gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Music\, where he studied piano\, clarinet and orchestration. In March 2012\, Prince Charles presented him with his Fellowship of the RCM. He was also made a Professor at the London College of Music. \nAs a much sought after session musician in the late sixties and early seventies\, he played on more than 2\,000 records\, including such hits as Cat Stevens’ Morning Has Broken and David Bowie’s Space Oddity and Life on Mars\, and worked with a real eclectic mixture of other notable artistes\, such as Donovan\, Cilla Black\, Marc Bolan\, Black Sabbath\, Lou Reed\, Mary Hopkin\, Dana\, Al Stewart\, Elton John and John Williams. \nIn March 1970\, he joined Strawbs. His first album with them\, Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios\, paved the way for ‘folk-rock’ and reviews from their concert at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on July 11th of that year did much to take Rick’s career to a new level. \nHe joined YES in August of 1971 and has been in and out of that band on quite a few occasions! (One journalist likened the relationship to that of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor\, in as much as they can’t live with each other\, but in the same breath\, can’t live without each other! Rick told the journalist he didn’t disagree as long as it was accepted that he was ‘Richard Burton’!) \nBoth as a solo artist and with YES\, he has sold more than 50\,000\,000 albums\, although he says that only past management would be able to tell you where the royalties went! \n \n  Check out the City of Rahway’s Dinner & Show Deals! \nSee all of UCPAC’s Upcoming Events

SUMMARY:STEVEN KEENE
DESCRIPTION:Steven Keene\nThursday\, September 12\n7 PM\nJoin Americana/Folk musician Steven Keene for a one-night-only performance at Hamilton Stage! A career spanning three decades\, Keene has gained recent notoriety and critical praise for his hit song\, “This World is Your World.” No Depression raves of the track\, “Keene reincarnates [Woody] Guthrie’s most iconic protest original to deliver an anti-authoritarian anthem for a global age….” You won’t want to miss an unforgettable night of singing along to Keene’s catalog of hits as well as honoring some of the most popular protest songs of a generation. \n\nAbout Steven Keene \nKeene grew up in Brooklyn\, New York\, and got his start playing the folk clubs and cafes of the Greenwich Village scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s\, alongside contemporaries like Beck\, Suzanne Vega\, Shawn Colvin\, and others. Heavily inspired by the songwriting of Bob Dylan\, Woody Guthrie\, and Leonard Cohen\, he began performing his earliest material at The Speakeasy\, the now-closed folk club that was a singer-songwriter staple in the ’90s. \nKeene played regularly at joints like Sun Mountain Cafe and The Chameleon\, and for years would crisscross the streets of McDougal and Bleecker\, playing well-known clubs including The Bottom Line\, Lone Star Cafe\, The Mercury Lounge\, The Bitter End\, Arlene’s Grocery\, and the legendary CBGB’s. But for Keene\, it was always about the music\, and never about the fame. Maybe that’s why he surrounded himself with only the best players\, focused only on the music\, and became obsessed with honing his craft as he gigged his way from one smoke-filled Village club to the next. \n+ Special FREE Spirits Tasting By Muckleyeye 6:30PM. Local Colts Neck distillery featuring Vodka\, Gin\, Bourbon\, Rye and Rum. \n \n \nSee all of UCPAC’s Upcoming Events

SUMMARY:DIE WALKÜRE - A STAGED OPERA
DESCRIPTION:DIE WALKÜRE by Wagner\nSaturday\, July 27\n5 PM\nA Staged Opera Presented by New Jersey Opera Theater\nBefore there was The Lord of the Rings\, there was The Ring Cycle\, of which DIE WALKÜRE is a part. A series of four operas by Richard Wagner\, The Ring Cycle is based loosely on Norse mythology. \nThe story revolves around a magic ring that grants the power to rule the world\, forged by Alberich from the gold he stole from mermaids in the River Rhine. Crushed by his loss\, Alberich lays a curse on the ring: until it returns to him\, it will inspire restless jealousy in those who won it and murderous envy in those who don’t\, thus condemning all the possessors of the ring. \nSeveral mythic figures struggle for possession of the ring\, including Wotan (Odin)\, the chief of the gods. Wotan’s scheme spanning generations\, to overcome his limitations\, drives much of the action of the story. DIE WALKÜRE is where all of Wotan’s earthly and celestial children get caught up in his mess from the curse of the ring. During DIE WALKÜRE Act 1\, we get to meet Wotan’s earthly love children and learn of their cursed past. Yes\, Wotan had an affair with a mortal woman\, which really upset his Goddess wife\, Fricka\, which we hear about in Act 2. Wotan’s other daughter\, Brünnhilde\, is forced by her father to do something to make Fricka happy\, but she disobeys her father and stepmother. (BACKSTORY: Yes\, Brünnhilde and her 8 sisters are the love children of Erde\, not Fricka. Oh\, that Wotan! So do you see where this family dynamic is going?!) Because of Brünnhilde’s betrayal\, all hell breaks loose\, which brings us to The Ride of the Valkyries in Act 3. To find out how Alberich’s curse has destroyed this celestial family\, please come to the show! \nDid you know? Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music over the course of approximately 26 years\, from 1848-1874\, and although the individual operas (DAS RHEINGOLD\, DIE WALKÜRE\, SIEGFRIED AND GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG) are performed as standalone shows\, Wagner wanted them to be performed as a series. \nCOSPLAY INVITATION:\nThis production will take place during the 1920s to pay tribute to the history of Union County Performing Arts Center’s Main Stage\, which was built in 1928 and is currently celebrating its 95th anniversary. To keep the 1920s atmosphere\, we will use the theater’s original “Biggest Little Wurlitzer”. Jazz music will play during two 20 minute intermissions\, and cocktails will be available in UCPAC’s Café Bar. Come celebrate our incredible evening of Wagner and Jazz! \nNew Jersey Opera Theater Cast:\nSiegmund: Joseph Mayon\, Sieglinde: Elisabeth Shoup\, Hunding: Steven Fredericks\, Wotan: Charles Schneider\, Brünnhilde: Elizabeth Perryman\, Fricka: Lorraine Helvick\, Gerhilde: Tara Jamshidian\, Ortlinde: Analía Corpas\, Helmwige: Roseanne Ackerley\, Waltraute: Anna Viemeister\, Siegrune: Mary Hochgesang\, Grimgerde: Lori Rohrs\, Roßweise: Julianne Froehlich\, Schwertleite: Brittany Walker\, Stage Direction by Dennis Oliveira\, and Conducted by Hugh Keelan. \nTo purchase accessible seating\, please call UCPAC’s Box Office at 732-499-8226. \n \n \n  Check out the City of Rahway’s Dinner & Show Deals! \nSee all of UCPAC’s Upcoming Events
