UCPAC WELCOMES OPERA PERFORMANCE OF UKRAINIAN FOLKTALE ‘THE CHRISTMAS SPIDER.’

RAHWAY, NJ – On December 14, the Union County Performing Arts Center (UCPAC) proudly partners with New Jersey Opera Theater in collaboration with the American Opera Project (AOP) for a holiday performance of “The Christmas Spider.”

In this story, a family faces hardship and uncertainty on a cold Christmas Eve where their luck suddenly changes with a gentle spider that brings the family together through an unexpected blessing. This story of love and hope during the holiday season takes inspiration from the Ukrainian-originated legend, “The Christmas Spider.”

The Ukrainian story is a heartwarming folktale about the origin of Christmas tinsel. The legend follows a poor family unable to afford decorating their Christmas tree, to which the spiders in their house then cover the tree in webs overnight. With the first light of Christmas morning, the webs turn radiant in silver and gold like tinsel, hence the name “The Christmas Spider.”

As with this event, UCPAC works in partnership with the New Jersey Opera Theater, led by Rahway resident Joseph Mayon, to offer local communities dynamic performances and exceptional shows. With mentorship, local high school and college students are able to join these professionals as part of the orchestra, chorus, or even understudies for lead roles.
